Dr Caroline Hattam

Senior Scientist (Environmental economist)

Caroline’s research explores the social, economic and well-being impacts of changes in the marine environment (resulting from, e.g. MPAs, offshore wind farms and ocean acidification), and the strategies that can be used to manage these impacts. In addition she undertakes marine and coastal ecosystem service assessment and valuation using economic techniques, subjective well-being measures, qualitative assessments, deliberative and visual methods. She has a PhD in Agricultural and Food Economics and before joining PML she worked in the UK and overseas in different capacities (academic, NGO and UN agency). Caroline is currently a co-lead on a Newton Fund project (NeTComFish) with the University of Malaya exploring the use and management of mangrove resources; has overall responsibility for stakeholder engagement in an EC funded project assessing the economic benefits of marine protected areas and is completing the GCRF Coral Communities project focusing on building resilience to environmental change in the Western Indian Ocean (PI). Caroline uses both quantitative and qualitative research methods in her work, has experience in the organisation and facilitation of stakeholder consultation through focus groups and workshops, the design and distribution of questionnaire surveys, and statistical and econometric analysis.
